The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) DRACO programme aims to demonstrate an NTP system above low Earth orbit in 2025. The agency in April announced it had awarded contracts for the first 18-month phase of the programme: a USD22 million contract for Track A, focused on the design of the NTP reactor, to General Atomics; and a USD2.5 million contract for Track B, focused on the operational spacecraft to demonstrate it, to Blue Origin. "This is a remarkable moment for NTP development and for our company" Paolo Venneri, USNC-Tech executive vice president, said. "Our selection to participate in not one but two teams for the DRACO programme shows the strength of our ability to design and analyse these high-performance systems." Activity in cislunar space - that is, between the Earth and the Moon - is rising as space agencies and companies around the world pursue new lunar ambitions, USNC said. NTP systems, which use a nuclear reactor to heat propellant to extreme temperatures before expelling the hot propellant through a nozzle to produce thrust, offer a thrust-to-weight ratio around 10,000 times greater than electric propulsion and a propellant efficiency that is two-to-five times greater than chemical propulsion. The White House in December 2020 issued a memorandum establishing a national strategy to ensure the development and use of space nuclear power and propulsion systems, including NTP systems, which can power spacecraft for missions where alternative power sources are inadequate. The technology being developed under the DRACO programme could also be foundational to future operations beyond cislunar space, such as the development of an NTP system for the first human missions to Mars, USNC said. "Even with the difference in scale of engine and spacecraft, a successfully demonstrated DRACO NTP can directly influence and speed up demonstration of a NASA NTP, said Vishal Patel, analysis lead at USNC-Tech and company lead for spacecraft development in Track A.

Just a Curiosity question… Couldn’t we just use the existing temperature differences in space as a power source, the heat of the sun and cold of the dark side of space to essentially run a steam engine. I mean i dont know for how long you could use it but I’m thinking that if you used photo sensors to keep the one side always facing the sun that it would work… Right??? Kind of like for a shuttle from earth to the moon kind of a system.

Hydrogen becomes liquid at 20 degrees Kelvin. Space is about 3 degrees Kelvin. Shouldn’t that take care of part of the issue of cryogenic storage of hydrogen? It’s a bit warmer in the Solar system, but still pretty cold. Also the figures for thrust and specific impulse used the atomic weight of hydrogen, but hydrogen is almost always encountered as molecular hydrogen, H2. Or does the ion engine split the molecules into monoatomic hydrogen?

Because of this, Hydrogen is believed to be the most abundant element, accounting for about 90% of the visible universe." yeah this would be great! now if we can just figure out faster than light speed travel .... hmmmmmm

By stating that Voyager 1 is in Interstellar space, you make it sound like it is beyond our solar system however, whilst in theory that may be the case, it is still within the Oort Cloud, or solar systems shell and will be for the next 20,000 years. The answer to your video question is simple, at this time, regardless of the engine, no, you cannot take humans to Mars. It's not about how fast and powerful your rocket engine is, it is about payloads and the amount of water required to protect humans from radiation, it is just not viable.

A radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG, RITEG) is a type of nuclear battery that uses an array of thermocouples to convert the heat released by the decay of a suitable radioactive material into electricity by the Seebeck effect. This type of generator has no moving parts. Power can be stored as liquid hydrogen and oxygen (from water )

Maybe you are the one to check again the possibilty of 4 about same size wings A380 at front set (much) higher with 2 from 4 engines blowing and swiveling over back winos that way smaller etc. for smaller airports then CNG 700+ bar (double dense from or LNG) added also inside for cost savings and more secure than kerosene. Addable outside turnable engines, TiB2 or TiC + vacuum chambers isolation + Ti alloy shell also cooled by CNG/O2 gas expansion for hypersonic and space flights to earth orbit hotel or mars & l TiB2 made melted and welded in very high pressure argon filled room with robots. Rocket engines don't use air oygene and N2 acceleration mass burning much outside of rocket cone but maybe boostable with tank O2 for vertical starts and only that in outer space etc.

Stupid science Science doesn't know Every second the Sun emits billions billions billions ^ billion lightning 0,1 voltage create sunlight, 1 positron + suck 1 electron -- create lightning 0,1 voltage. Science poisoning the world is the solar system rotating inertia, children also know that inertia doesn't maket the wheel to spin forever, Explain Positron + and electron -- rotate very rapidly after 4, 6 billion years of creating the Sun ' s core, so the core of the Sun rotates very quickly like A super large electric turbine that produces super large electrical energy Every second the Sun emits 4,1million tons of electricity create sunlight, sunlight moves the circle back to its original position after 8 hours, so pushes the 8 planet to rotate in order

I understand that plasma enginess have higher specific impulse than ion engines. Further, since the plasma is magnetically contained, there is no erosion as is experienced in ion engine acceleration grids. Finally, plasma engines can use any material as a working fluid, including water and solids. VASIMIR is one current technology under development and testing.

Energy Source for Replacing Big, Dangerous, Smelly, Expensive Batteries. Excerpts from the book - "Secrets of Cold War Technology" by Gerry Vassilatos (pages 86-93) : Mr. Savo reported that in 1931, he participated in an experiment involving etheric power. He was asked to accompany his uncle, Nikola Tesla, on a long train ride to Buffalo. Taken into a small garage, Dr. Tesla walked directly to a Pierce Arrow, opened the hood and began making a few adjustments. In place of an internal combustion engine, there was an AC motor. From it trailed two very thick cables, which were connected to a terminal in the dashboard. Here, Tesla plugged in a shoe box sized "Black Box". In addition, there was a single ordinary 12-Volt battery. Dr. Tesla informed his nephew that the device could not only supply the needs of the car forever, but could also supply the needs of a household "with power to spare". Of the motive source, he referred to "a mysterious radiation, which comes out of the aether" and "it is available in limitless quantities". - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - > 50 years ago, famous physicist Richard Feynman said : The vacuum of “empty space” appears to be an energy reservoir of immense capacity that makes nuclear power seem old fashioned. The amount of energy available in one cubic centimeter of the vacuum (ambient space) is much greater than the energy density in an atomic nucleus.

Why not keep hydrogen and oxygen joined, then thru electrolysis separate the two, then spray them over the igniter. U could store the water as ice (shielding), melt, pump fluid to hydrogen generator, then recombine, periodically after the storage tanks are replenished. Perhaps rotating tanks and heating post use, would change the accumulation of hydrogen on the tanks.
