The Scotichronicon? What is it? Oh well that's simple, it's a book full of rituals for summoning an angry ginger guy for comedy and fist fights. You might think that walking around north of the Scottish border chanting England England England over and over again would be enough but no, it turns out that similar rituals can be performed in specific areas of Scotland depending on how drunk, how orange and how angry you want them to be. It's well worth the read but I recommend signing up with bupa before actually attempting any of said rituals just to be on the safe side.

In regards to the books that CGP Grey mentioned in this video, do they only exist as physical copies, or are they available on the web? The reason I ask is that I'm always fearful of old books being destroyed and their knowledge being lost because no one took the time to preserve their information in other formats.

I love stories of discoveries, even if (especially when?), at the end the discovery is disappointment. The passion for discovery and emotional roller coaster are what make the story engaging, and the secondary discoveries made along the way are worth at least as much as achieving the goal. However trivial and irrelevant they are.

@CGP Grey I might have an explanation as to why the poem is funny. A very quick browse with "son chien hardigras" leads to La Bretagne, by Jules Jani (1843 or 1846), in which the author explains that after the conquest of England by the French, people from Brittany moved massively overseas, I quote (or rather, translate): 'Thus emigration to England was general. The boldest [...] raided this conquered England like birds of prey would a 'cemetery' [champ de funérailles]. This thirst for novelty went so far that the richest manors in Brittany, abandoned by their owners, went fallow for lack of arms to plow.' He carries on to explain that the de Cognisby poem would have emerged as a way to make fun of this massive exodus as the little lords bled out of the region in search for a new land: 'Even in this regard, the chronicle, which sometimes goes astray as a real gossip, tells us about the arrival of a little lord named William of Cognisby who came to England with his wife Tiphaine, his servant Mansa and his dog Hardi Gras [literally 'brave' and 'fat']. This transplant of one Brittany into another, from the smaller to the larger, was done as unceremoniously as one might move nowadays.' Hope this helps! Thanks for the stories you dig up :)

Over the years I've done a lot of genealogical research for people and that has often included researching the history of locales, families, and events, so I'm familiar with the twists and turns you follow in such instances. I liked this journey and how you related it. One of the most interesting was researching the location of the house of a person's ancestor in what is now known as the Docklands in London. The house was in a street in an area, which over the centuries, had been swamp, farmland, swamp, water beside a dock, filled residential land, water beside a dock, filled commercial land, and is now a cross of commercial and residential land. Nothing in England is ever easy due to how they kept changing things.
