The diving gondola: a strange elevator to the ocean floor

On the German coast of the Baltic Sea, there's a tourist attraction that I think is very strange: the "Tauchgondel", a room that sinks under the waves and lets you go diving... without getting wet.

More about the Tauchgondel:

I've been on tourist submarines twice, in the Marianas Islands. I'm humbled to realize I can't remember if it was Saipan, Guam, or both. We got to see wrecks left from WWII in addition to tropical sea life.

That is a brilliant, elegant and simple idea! Would love to experience it, even if visibility is zero. Let's have one in the Menai Strait, for instance, where the water is some of the clearest around Britain, and the currents are strong without being excessive.

As a german who grew accustomed to not only hearing but speaking english throughout my day, this has kind of tricked my brain. The moment the german guy starts explaining stuff about the gondola, I was like "this sounds awfully familiar... but I don't know the words that he's speaking... OH ITS GERMAN"

I went to the one on Rügen recently. It was cool just to peacefully watch the water and the few jellyfish floating by... but that only lasted 5 minutes because they then put down the shutters and played the goofy 3D film for the rest of the time. 3D is bad enough, but here you have to watch it at an extreme angle because of the shaft in the middle of the gondola and this angle ruins the 3D effect. And it was just straightforward nature footage anyways - very odd choice. I would rather them submerge and simply talk about the fish, engineering, etc.

This isn't a true diving bell. Those have open floors and use the air in the bell as a buffer to force the water down for viewing. Those however are easily quite dangerous given the open water and necessity to dive totally straight as any angle would let air slip out to be filled with the sea. Today glass bottomed boats offer much the same while being far safer.
