The world's last turntable ferry has a really clever design

In Glenelg, on the west coast of Scotland, there's the Skye Ferry: the last turntable ferry in the world. And the reason for that turntable is a lot more clever than I initially thought.

    Very nice... Good to hear a community clubbing together to preserve their history, culture and shortcut... It's more often than not the other way round now in rural areas - more likely to gang up to shut down a traditional rural activity.

      @eioshen boboi .. Scotland s far too reliant on money from England, oil and whisky. If it leaves the UK I ery much doubt the EU would want them... Their economy is worse than many Eastern European ex-commy nations not let into the Union on economic grounds.. There are corporate conglomerates with more money than Scotland.. It is a weak, parasitic pseudo-nation in many ways.....!

    I regularly take this ferry at Gleann Eilg - always a great chance to see passing porpoises in the strong waters. The scenic road North starting from the other quay is worth travelling, too, hence the smart motors on the ferry!

    I have been on it with a motorbike! Liked it a lot, saw a seal swimming near us while we were on it. But I had nog idea it was manually pushed around and the last of its kind in the world.

    Corran ferry and Ballachulish ferry both had turntable units. Ballachulish ferries closed when the bridge opened.

    I went on this ferry once, it was super cool! Slight warning though - the road down to it is quite steep and probably not great if you're not a confident driver.

    I thought the ferry was going to sit parallel to the flow of water, using its engines to counter the current whilst the turntable swivelled around to let the cars off.

    Here, in my part of Australia, we have a ramp on each ilsand, out in the water are pylons. The barge comes into the land, between the pylons and the pylons sort of hold it in place. That way the current is moot when the barge is between the pylons.

    It's a good thing that the SNP have had nothing to do with this successful Ferry project ... ! 😁 Maybe this idea should be exported to other Countries that could benefit a lot by this common-sense and practical solution ... Africa & South America are certainly places where I have seen videos of places that could benefit from this approach involving minimal infrastructure cost and maintenance ... Fascinating story.     Engineers can solve problems if someone sets them to it. But no gov't sics a pack of engineers on the issue of the average temperatures pushing toward the edge of where humans can survive.     I've only ever taken my car onto a ferry once, on the Lake Champlain ferry between Plattsburgh, NY and Grand Isle, Vermont. Stunning Trip. Highly recommend it.
