The US is overall dropping performances in a lot of areas, not just basketball. US mentality is to focused on "Making money", the value of being "the best" and the "honor of winning" isn't considered valuable enough. But half of these competitors are already rich as balls, so it's not enough to motivate them to perform. While other teams are motivated by the thought of "overcoming" the US.

NBA is plagued by three problems. Too much iso-ball, no defense, and lack of physicality. I remember what made me tune out. When the term "business decision" became the norm, I was done. I miss the days when two guys would meet at the rim. One trying to dunk, the other trying to block. Either way, somebody is going to get bragging rights. Now everything players do are "business decisions". No defense, sitting out games, joining up with your buddies to win championships? No thank you.

Jimmy as always I really love the videos... Here are my two cents being a European player of the 90's and 00's. Firstly the gap that has reduced the most between USA v World of basketball is the athleticism... No other country could match the dream team in terms of physicality... The sport was not nearly as scientifically developed as it is now all over the world. It was played but the USA had god like athletes... And christian Latener. Only in the last decade or so the training culture and science has cought up globally. What "we" always had though was great coaching and the culture of sport scholars that is not the same in USA (my modest openion) that has allowed us to grow and be able to make a difference where possible. We may not shoot as well not fly as much but we take smart shots kind of thing. Referees, unfortunately the the level of referee in USA is allowing rule breaking, while outside the home of basketball the match officials have made it harder on players and developed their game facing tougher conditions. Lastly... Conflict. The world is a.much better place now... Still some work to do of course, but travelling is far more accessible and talent really has a chance to be both discovered and mostly allow you to reach your dream... That damned ring. Firstl

(Slovenia and Serbia were the same country until 1991) and i don't think people got that affected by drafting a foreign player. You have to take into consideration the Cold War that was going on - anything soviet related was demonic, anti-christ. So it wasn't exacly because Sabonis was foreign, more than because he was from the soviet union.
