American here. The part of me that cares a lot about accuracy is annoyed that we, in the US, are the Americans and that "America" usually = USA. The rest of me says, "Welp, that's the way of words and language. This is the norm, has been for centuries now, so there's no use being too annoyed about it."

The name of our country is The United States of America. America being part of the Americas. We don’t call our country America because that’s not the name of our country, we say The United States, the U.S. or simply The States. The only ones I’ve ever heard call us America are Europeans. In fact, that’s one way I can tell right away that someone isn’t from here, by calling us America.

South American continent. North American Continent. A country made up of 50 United “States”. The United States of America. Or if you want: The United States of North America. I was once in Iceland soaking in a small natural hot spring. A lady approached me and asked me where I was from. I replied: Im from Pennsylvania in the US. She looked slightly disappointed and then said: I’m glad you didn’t say America because I’m from Ecuador and I’m and American too! I replied hello fellow American! I think most people from the US say they are from US or they mention their state. Only British people say America. We don’t generally use America or American. Unless we drop the “a” and simply say ‘Merica, which is promptly followed by “f-ck yea!

One thing I’d like to point out is that, after the “American” Revolution, people did want to change the name. It turns out “The United States of America” doesn’t roll off the tongue too easily. There were a couple options: - Columbia - Fredonia - No Change Nobody really *liked* the name “USA”. They thought about changing it to the obvious “Columbia”, but that didn’t really work because “Colombia” already existed in South America. So that was a no-go. Then they tried “Fredonia”. As a claim of “freedom”! But it also sounded kinda weird, and no one could really decide. Inevitably, the “American” Civil War happened, and the name “United States of America” suddenly held much more substantial meaning. It’s kind of cheesy but eh whatever. If we really wanna be accurate: The USA needs to be called “British America” Canada needs to be called “French America” Mexico needs to be called “Spanish America” And everything else needs to be called “French-British-Spanish-Portuguese-Japanese-Chinese America”

It’s actually sad that we can’t really identify as Americans to avoid confusion. I mean, people from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, etc, can all proudly say they are European. But in america (the continent) we can’t really say we are Americans, bc it sounds as if we were saying we were from the US. In Spanish we can say it, but it still sounds off.

    • Pseudonym

      Klukkustund síðan

@Silva We aren't 'claiming' America- this whole argument is in bad faith, and always has been; nobody gets mad at the "European Union" for daring to call itself European when there are many countries geographically in Europe that are not a part of it such as Serbia, Norway, and Ukraine. Is it fair for Norwegians to complain to the EU, saying they are "appropriating" the name of their continent? No! The European Union is a union of European states. Just as the USA is a union of Americans states. Sure, we are not all of the Americas-only part of it, but we are in America and we are a union of Americans. Just because we call ourselves the USA, that does not make you Brazilians any less American in the sense of being from the American continent than the EU calling themselves European robs Belarusians and Serbs of their European-ness. Seriously, this is a total non-issue. If it were any country other than the US, nobody would ever bring this up.

PREACH IT!! I'm brazilian and I agree with everything you said lol They simply appropriated the name of an entire continent... By the way the famous US architect Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term "USONIA" to refer to his vision of the landscape of the United States, including architecture and urbanism. He proposed the use of the USONIAN adjective in place of American to distinguish and dissociate the particular characteristics of American landscapes... They could get inspired by the Wright and call themselves USonions lol

@Jay Foreman Ah, that explains why all the song-identifying apps I used kept coming up blank. Thanks for replying, Jay! The music sounds kind of familiar to me, don't know why. I thought it was your recording of some famous hit and kept trying to remember which. Well, now I can finally go to sleep without trying to remember something I had no chance of knowing in the first place.

Jay, you already have the channel in your name and you don't even let Mark do the ad-read… that's a very american behaviour for a british person I must say.

To be fair, Mark does the ad read on most of the other ones. Also, there are lots of Markless videos coming up on this channel later this year!

In Sweden we refer to the country in question as USA, (pronounced as the three letters, not as a word). I don't see any reason why that wouldn't also work in English. Isn't the country sometimes just referred to as "The US" even in English? Amerika (Swedish spelling of America) refers to either North America or North + South American. So there is still some ambiguity there.

I just screamed when Jay said "Johannes von Waldburg Wolfegg Waldsee". Why do I feel like I got personally mentioned in this video, even though it's just the village I'm from? Haha

I still maintain that countries are called what we call them and/or what they call themselves. Therefore America (in English) is the correct name. A name up for debate would be Burma.
